Therearesomemomentsinlifethatwewillneverforget.Forme,oneofthosemomentswascapturedinaphotographthatIstumbleduponwhilecleaningoutmygrandmother'sattic.Itwasapictureofmyparentsontheirweddingday,andseeingtheiryouthfulfacessmilingbackatmebroughtbackafloodofmemories–bothhappyandsad.Thisphotographwasnotjustapieceofpaperwithinkonit;itwasatimecapsulethattransportedmebacktoadifferentera.AsIsatthere,reminiscingaboutthepast,Irealizedthatthispicturehadplayedamuchbiggerroleinmyfamily'shistorythanIhadeverimagined.Myparentshadbeenhighschoolsweethearts,andtheyhadalwaysbeenverymuchinlove.Whenmyfatherproposedtomymother,shesaidyeswithouthesitation.Theyhadasimpleweddingceremony,surroundedbyclosefamilyandfriends.Mymotherlookedradiantinherwhiteweddingdress,andmyfatherwasbeamingwithjoy.Thiswasthehappiestdayoftheirlives.Thephotographshowedmyparentsstandinginfrontofaflower-filledarchway,holdinghandsandsmilingateachother.Mymother'shairwasstyledinachicbob,andhermakeupwasflawless.Myfatherwasdressedinablacksuit,lookingeverybitthedashinggroom.Theylookedsoinlove,sohappy–itwasalmostasifthepicturewasalive.
AsIlookedcloseratthephotograph,Inoticedsomethingstrange.Therewasamanstandinginthebackground,half-hiddenbythearchway.Hehadaseriousexpressiononhisface,andheseemedtobewatchingmyparentsintently.Whowashe?Ihadneverseenhimbefore.Iaskedmygrandmotheraboutthemaninthephotograph,butshecouldnotidentifyhim.Shesuggestedthathemighthavebeenafriendofmygrandfather'swhohadattendedthewedding.Butsomethingaboutthewayhewaslookingatmyparentsmademeuneasy.Iputthephotographasideandtriedtoforgetaboutit,butitkeptnaggingatme.Whowasthatman,andwhywashewatchingmyparentslikethat?IdecidedtodosomediggingofmyownandseeifIcouldfindoutmoreabouthim.Afterhoursofscouringoldfamilyrecordsandaskingrelatives,Ifinallyfoundoutwhothemaninthephotographwas.HisnamewasJames,andhehadbeenmymother'sex-boyfriend.Accordingtomyaunt,Jameshadnevergottenovermymother,andhehadshownupuninvitedatthewedding.Myparentshadbeentoopolitetoturnhimaway,sotheyhadallowedhimtostay.

Butthefearneverfullywentaway.IfeltlikeIwaslivinginaconstantstateofparanoia,alwaysworryingthatJameswouldcomebackandhurtus.Itwasduringthistimethatmygrandmotherpassedaway.Asweweregoingthroughherbelongings,Ifoundaletteraddressedtome.Init,sherevealedasecretthatshehadkepthiddenfordecades.Theletterexplainedthatmymotherhadbeenpregnantwhenshegotmarried,butshehadlostthebabyjustweeksbeforethewedding.Myparentshadbeendevastatedbytheloss,buttheyhadputonabravefacefortheweddingday.Mygrandmother'sletteralsorevealedsomethingelse–somethingthatmademegaspinshock.Jameshadbeenthefatherofthebaby.
