Foreword:
Thegardenwaslikeasecrethaventuckedawayinthemidstofbustlingcitylife,hiddenbehindtoweringconcretewallsthatshieldeditfrompryingeyes.Itwasaplacethatonlyafewfortunatesoulshadtheprivilegeofdiscovering,asanctuaryofpeaceandtranquilitywhereonecouldescapethechaosoftheworldandimmerseoneselfinthebeautyofnature.Therewasanairofmysterythatsurroundedthegarden,asthoughitheldsecretsthatonlytheplantsandtreeswereprivyto.Asoneenteredthegarden,asenseofcalmnessenvelopedthesoul.Theairwasfilledwiththesweetfragranceofbloomingflowers,andthegentlehumofbeesandbutterflieshoveringoverthem.Thereweretalltreeswithgnarledtrunksandsprawlingbranchesthatseemedtoreachuptotheheavens,asiftryingtotouchthestars.Thegroundwascoveredwithlushgreengrassthatstretchedoutlikeasoftcarpet,invitingonetositandbaskinthesun'swarmth.Inonecornerofthegardenstoodasmallpond,itscrystalclearwatersreflectingtheblueskyabove.Thesurfaceofthewaterwasstill,savefortheoccasionalripplecausedbyapassingbreeze.Inthedepthsofthepondswamschoolsofcolorfulfish,dartinginandoutofthewaterplantsthatgrewalongitsbanks.Asmallwoodenbridgearchedoverthepond,connectingonesideofthegardentotheother.
Amidstallthisbeauty,theresatalonefigureonabench,lostinthought.Shewasayoungwomanwithlongblackhairthatcascadeddownherbackinwaves.Herfacewaspale,andhereyesweredeepanddark,asthoughtheyheldaworldofsecretswithinthem.Shesatthereforhours,gazingatthegardenaroundher,lostinherownthoughts.HernamewasLily,andshehadstumbleduponthegardenbychance.Shehadbeenwanderingaimlesslythroughthecitystreets,lostinaseaofpeople,whenshehadseenasmallsignthatread'SecretGarden'.Intrigued,shehadfollowedthearrow,andsoonfoundherselfstandingbeforethegarden'sgates.Assheenteredthegarden,shefeltasthoughshehadbeentransportedtoanotherworld.Thenoiseofthecitywasleftfarbehind,andallaroundherwasthesoundofnature'smusic.Shehadwanderedthroughthegarden,mesmerizedbyitsbeauty,untilshehadcomeuponthebenchwhereshenowsat.Lilyhadcometothegardentoescapehertroubledlife.Shehadlostherjob,herboyfriendhadlefther,andshewasstrugglingtomakeendsmeet.Shehadnofamilyorfriendstoturnto,andwasfeelinglostandaloneintheworld.Butasshesatinthegarden,surroundedbynature'sbeauty,shefeltaglimmerofhope.
Daysturnedintoweeks,andLilybecamearegularvisitortothegarden.Shewouldspendhourssittingonthebench,lostinthought,orwalkingthroughthegarden'smanypaths,admiringitsbeauty.Shebegantonoticethesubtlechangesinthegardenastheseasonspassed,marvelingathowthecolorsoftheflowerswouldchangefromonemonthtothenext.Oneday,asshesatonthebench,lostinthought,sheheardarustlinginthebushesbehindher.Startled,sheturnedtoseeasmallcreaturestaringatherwithcuriouseyes.Itwasafox,itsredfurshimmeringinthesun'srays.Foramoment,Lilyheldherbreath,unsureofwhattodo.Butthenthefox,apparentlysatisfiedthatsheposednothreat,scamperedaway.Fromthatdayon,Lilybegantonoticemoreofthegarden'sinhabitants.Shesawbirdsbuildingtheirnestsinthetrees,squirrelsscurryingalongthebranches,andeventheoccasionalrabbitorhedgehogdartingacrossthegrass.Shefeltasthoughshewaspartofasecretworld,hiddenawayfromtherestofthecity.Butdespitethegarden'sbeautyandthejoyitbroughther,Lilycouldnotescapetherealityofherlife.Herfinancialsituationwasworseningbytheday,andsheknewthatshecouldnotcontinuetosurviveonthelittlemoneyshehadleft.Shebegantosearchforanewjob,spendinghourseachdayscrollingthroughjobwebsitesandsendingoutresumes.
Daysturnedintoweeks,andweeksturnedintomonths.Lilybecameincreasinglydespondentasshereceivedrejectionafterrejection.Shebegantolosehope,feelingasthoughtherewasnowayoutofhersituation.Butstill,shereturnedtothegardeneachday,findingsolaceinitsbeauty.Oneday,asshesatonthebenchlostinthought,shefeltataponhershoulder.Startled,sheturnedtoseeakindlyoldmanstandingbehindher.Heintroducedhimselfastheownerofthegarden,andaskedLilywhathadbroughthertohissecrethaven.Lilytoldhimherstory,ofhowshehadstumbleduponthegardenandhowithadbecomeaplaceofrefugeforher.Theoldmanlistenedintently,hiseyesfullofcompassion.Whenshehadfinished,hesmiledandtoldherthathehadapropositionforher.Heexplainedthathewaslookingforsomeonetohelphimtakecareofthegarden,someonewhosharedhislovefornatureandunderstooditsdelicatebalance.HeofferedLilyajobashisassistant,promisingtopayherafairwageandprovideherwithaplacetolive.
Overwhelmedwithgratitude,Lilyacceptedtheoffer.Shemovedintoasmallcottageonthegarden'spremises,andbegantolearntheinsandoutsofcaringfortheplantsandanimalsthatcalledithome.Shespentherdaystendingtothegarden,andhernightssleepingpeacefully,surroundedbynature'sbeauty.Assheworked,Lilyfeltasenseofpurposethatshehadneverfeltbefore.Shefoundjoyinhelpingthegardenflourish,andinsharingitsbeautywiththefewvisitorswhowereluckyenoughtodiscoveritssecret.Andassheworked,shebegantohealfromthewoundsthatlifehadinflicteduponher.Monthsturnedintoyears,andLilybecameapermanentfixtureinthegarden.Shewatchedasnewflowersbloomedandoldtreesgrewtaller,andasnewgenerationsofanimalsmadetheirhomethere.Shegrewoldherself,butneverlostherloveforthegarden,norhersenseofgratitudetotheoldmanwhohadgivenheranewleaseonlife.Andthen,oneday,hewasgone.Theoldmanpassedawaypeacefullyinhissleep,leavingbehindalegacyofbeautyandwonderthatwouldliveonforgenerationstocome.Lilymournedhispassing,butknewthathehadleftherwithagiftgreaterthananyother.
Shecontinuedtocareforthegarden,nowasitssoleownerandcaretaker.Shewelcomednewvisitorstoitsgates,sharingwiththemthesecretsthatitheld.Andassheworked,shefelttheoldman'spresencearoundher,guidinghereverystepoftheway.Yearsturnedintodecades,andLilybecamealegendinthecity.Hergardenwasknownasaplaceofpeaceandtranquility,aplacewhereonecouldescapethechaosoftheworldandfindsolaceinnature'sembrace.Andthoughsheknewthatonedayshetoowouldbegone,shetookcomfortinthefactthathergardenwouldcontinuetothrive,atestamenttothebeautyoflifeitself.AsLilysatonthebench,lostinthought,shefeltasenseofgratitudewashoverher.Shelookedaroundatthegardenthatshehadcometolovesomuch,andfeltasenseofpeaceinhersoul.Forinthissecrethaventuckedawayinthemidstofbustlingcitylife,shehadfoundhertruehome.Andasthesunsetoverthegarden,castingawarmglowoveritsbeauty,Lilyclosedhereyesandwhisperedaprayerofthanksforthegiftthathadbeenbestoweduponher.Forsheknewthatinthisenchantedgarden,shehadfoundnotonlybeauty,butalsohope,healing,andlove.
