“Loveisabeautifulthing”,theysay.Butforme,itwassomethingthatIfoundhardtounderstand.Iwasyoungandnaive,notknowingwhatlovetrulymeant.Ihadheardofitfromfriends,family,andmedia,butIneverunderstoodthedepthofemotionsthatcamewithit.ThatwasuntilImethim.Hewascharming,funny,andeverythingIwantedinapartner.Wewereinseparable,alwaystogether,andwepromisedtoloveeachotherforever.However,thatpromisewasbroken,anditshatteredmyheartintoamillionpieces.Thisisthestoryofmyfirstheartbreak.ItallstartedinhighschoolwhenImethim.Wewereinthesameclass,andIrememberthefirsttimeIsawhim.Hewassittingatthebackoftheclassroomwithhisfriends,laughingandjokingaround.Iwasimmediatelydrawntohim,andIknewthatIhadtogettoknowhim.Westartedtalking,andIfoundoutthatwehadalotincommon.Webothlovedmusic,movies,andwehadthesametasteinbooks.Itfeltlikeweweremeanttobetogether.

Ourfriendshipturnedintoarelationship,andwestarteddating.Itwaslikeafairytale.Wewouldgoonlongwalks,watchthesunset,andtalkaboutourdreamsandaspirations.Hewasmyfirstlove,andIfeltlikenothingcouldevergowrong.Itrustedhimcompletely,andIbelievedthathefeltthesamewayaboutme.Buttheneverythingchanged.Oneday,outoftheblue,hetoldmethatheneededsometimealone.Hesaidthathewasgoingthroughsomepersonalissuesandthatheneededtofigurethingsout.Iwasdevastated.Ididn'tunderstandwhatwasgoingon,andIfeltlikehewaspushingmeaway.Itriedtotalktohim,buthewouldalwaysavoidtheconversation.

Daysturnedintoweeks,andweeksturnedintomonths.Ididn'thearfromhim,andIdidn'tknowwhattodo.Ifeltlikemywholeworldwasfallingapart.Thenoneday,hecalledme.Hesaidthathewassorryforwhathehaddoneandthathewantedtomeetup.Iwashesitantatfirst,butIagreed.Whenwemetup,hetoldmethathehadmetsomeoneelse.Hesaidthathehadfalleninlovewithher,andthathewantedtobewithher.Iwasshattered.Icouldn'tbelievewhatIwashearing.Ithoughtthathelovedme,andthatweweremeanttobetogetherforever.Butnow,itallseemedlikealie.

Itriedtoholdbackmytears,buttheyjustkeptfalling.Ifeltlikemyhearthadbeenrippedoutofmychest,andIdidn'tknowhowtocopewiththepain.Wesaidourgoodbyes,andIwenthome.Icriedmyselftosleepthatnight,andformanynightsafterthat.Ifeltlikeeverythingwasover.Mydreams,myhopes,myfuturewithhim–allofitwasgone.Butthensomethinginsidemesnapped.IrealizedthatIcouldn'tkeepcryingforever.Ineededtomoveonandfindhappinessagain.

Itwasn'teasy.EverytimeIsawacoupleholdinghandsorlaughingtogether,itwouldremindmeofwhatIhadlost.Butslowlyandsurely,Istartedtoheal.Istartedtofocusonmyselfandmyowngoals.IstartedtobelievethatIwasworthyofloveandhappiness.Yearspassed,andImetsomeoneelse.Hewaskind,loving,andeverythingthatIcouldeverwantinapartner.Wefellinlove,andwestartedourownfairytale.Wegotmarried,hadchildren,andlivedahappylifetogether.

Lookingback,Irealizethatmyfirstheartbreakwasablessingindisguise.Ittaughtmethatloveisnotalwayseasy,andthatsometimesyouhavetogothroughpaintofindtruehappiness.IttaughtmethatIamstrongandthatIcanovercomeanyobstaclethatcomesmyway.Ittaughtmetonevergiveuponlove,evenwhenitseemsimpossible.Andmostimportantly,ittaughtmethattearsmayfallwhenwefaceheartbreak,buttheywilleventuallydryup,andwewillfindhappinessagain.Soifyouaregoingthroughaheartbreakrightnow,rememberthatit'snottheend.Cryifyoumust,butdon'tgiveuponlove.Thereissomeoneouttherewaitingforyou,someonewhowillloveyouforwhoyouare.Keepyourheadup,andkeepmovingforward.Thebestisyettocome.
