Foreword:

Inaworldwherehumansdominateandanimalsareoftenseenaspests,itiseasytooverlookthefactthateverylivingcreaturehasitsownstory.Thisisthestoryofamouse,whosurvivedagainstalloddsandfoundfriendshipinunexpectedplaces.Themousewasborninadarkcornerofanoldbarn,amongmanysiblings,eachfightingforitsshareoffoodandspace.Fromtheverybeginning,themouseknewthatitslifewouldbeoneofconstantstruggle.Asthemousegrewup,itlearnedtobequickandagile,alwaysonthelookoutfordanger.Italsolearnedtoberesourceful,usingitssharpsensestofindfoodandshelterinthemostunlikelyplaces.

However,despiteitsbestefforts,themousecouldnotavoidthemanydangersthatlurkedaroundeverycorner.Itsawitssiblingsbeingcaughtbycatsandbirds,orpoisonedbyhumans.Itlearnedtomournsilentlyfortheirloss,knowingthatitcouldbenext.Oneday,asthemousewassearchingforfoodinanearbyfield,itheardthesoundofatractorcomingcloser.Itscamperedawayasfastasitcould,butitwastoolate.Thetractor'swheelsrolledoverthemouse,crushingitshindlegsandleavingitunabletomove.Themouselaythereforhours,unabletodoanythingbutwaitforitsfatetocome.Itfeltthecoldwindblowingoveritsfur,andthepainslowlyspreadingthroughitsbody.Itwonderedifthiswastheend.However,justwhenthemousehadgivenupallhope,itheardasoftvoicecallingouttoit.Itlookedupandsawalittlegirl,whohadbeenplayingnearby.Thegirlhadseenthemousebeingrunoverandhadcometohelp.

Thegirlgentlypickedupthemouseandexamineditsinjuries.Shesawthatthehindlegswerebadlycrushedandthatthemousecouldnotwalk.However,insteadofthrowingitaway,asmanyhumanswoulddo,thegirldecidedtohelp.Shetookthemousehomewithherandcaredforit,feedingitandgivingitawarmplacetosleep.Themousewassurprisedbythekindnessofthegirl,whocouldhaveeasilykilleditwithherbarehands.Itfeltasenseofgratitudetowardsher,andalsoanewfoundhope.Asthedayspassed,themouseslowlyhealed,thankstothegirl'scare.Itgrewstrongerandregainedsomemobilityinitslegs.Italsogrewclosertothegirl,whohadbecomeitsfriend.Themouselearnedtotrustthegirl,andtoventureoutofitshidingplacetoexploreitssurroundings.Itsawtheworldinanewlight,nolongerasahostileplacebutasaplacefullofwonderandpossibility.

However,themousealsoknewthatitcouldnotstaywiththegirlforever.Itwasawildanimal,meanttobefree,anditlongedtoreturntoitsoldlife.Itknewthatithadtoleave,butitalsoknewthatitwouldneverforgetthekindnessthathadbeenshowntoit.Oneday,whenthemousefeltstrongenough,itdecidedtosaygoodbyetothegirl.Itcrawledontoherlapandlookedintohereyes.Itfeltapangofsadnessasitrealizedthatitmightneverseeheragain.Thegirlunderstoodwhatwashappening,andshesmiledatthemouse.Shegentlystrokeditsfurandwhisperedwordsofencouragement.Shealsogavethemouseasmallpieceofcheese,asasymboloftheirfriendship.Themousetookthecheeseandnibbledonit,savoringitstaste.Itthencrawledoffthegirl'slapandscurriedaway,intotheunknown.Itfeltasenseoffreedomandexcitement,butalsoasenseofloss.

Asthemouseexploreditsoldhaunts,itrealizedthatthingshadchanged.Itsawtheworldfromadifferentperspective,nolongerasaweakandvulnerablecreaturebutasasurvivor.Italsorealizedthatitwasnotalone.Themouseencounteredotheranimals,somefriendlyandsomenot.Itlearnedtoavoiddangerandtoseekoutcompanionship.Itfoundamateandstartedafamily,teachingitsyoungthelessonsithadlearnedinlife.However,themousealsoneverforgotthegirlwhohadsaveditslife.Itreturnedtoherhomefromtimetotime,watchingherfromadistanceandrememberingtheirfriendship.Itknewthatitcouldnotstaywithher,butitalsoknewthatitwouldalwaysbegratefultoher.Yearspassed,andthemousegrewold.Itsawmanychangesintheworld,somegoodandsomebad.Itsawhumansdestroyingtheenvironmentandanimalsdyingout.Italsosawhumanscaringforanimalsandprotectingnature.

Asitlaydyinginitsoldage,themousereflectedonitslife.Itrealizedthatithadsurvivedagainstalloddsandthatithadfoundfriendshipinunexpectedplaces.Italsorealizedthatithadleftalegacy,afamilyofmicewhowouldcarryonitslegacy.Asitslastbreathleftitsbody,themousefeltatpeace.Itknewthatithadlivedafulllife,andthatithadmadeadifferenceintheworld.Italsoknewthatitwouldneverbeforgotten.Thegirlwhohadsavedthemouse'slifemanyyearsagoalsorememberedit,eventhoughshehadlongforgottenitsface.Sherememberedthesenseofjoyandwonderthathadcomewithcaringforahelplesscreature,andthesenseofsadnessthathadcomewithlettingitgo.Inaworldwherehumansandanimalsareoftenatodds,thememoryofthemouseandthegirlwhosaveditremindsusofthepowerofkindnessandfriendship.Itremindsusthateverylivingcreaturehasitsownstory,andthateverystoryisworthtelling.
