AsMaryenteredhighschool,shejoinedtheastronomyclubandtheroboticsteam.Shecompetedinsciencefairsandwonawardsforherprojects.Butsheneverforgotherultimategoalofbecominganastronaut.Whenitcametimetoapplyforcollege,Maryknewexactlywhatshewanted.Sheappliedtothebestschoolsforaerospaceengineeringandwasacceptedintoatopprogram.Herparentswerethrilled,buttheyworriedabouthowtheywouldpayforit.ButMaryhadasolution.Sheappliedforeveryscholarshipshecouldfindandworkedpart-timejobstosavemoney.ThenextfewyearsweregruelingforMary.Shespentlonghoursinthelab,workingonexperimentsandprojects.Shehadlittletimeforsocializingorrelaxing.Butsheneverlostsightofherdream.Aftergraduation,MaryappliedtoNASA'sastronautprogram.Itwasahighlycompetitiveprogram,andtheoddswereagainsther.Butshedidn'tletthatdeterher.Shetrainedharderthanever,runningmarathonsandpracticingherflyingskills.
