Asshewaswalkingtowardsthedaycarecenter,shenoticedamansittingonthesidewalk.Hewasholdingasignthatread"HomelessandHungry.Anythinghelps."Janecouldn'thelpbutfeelapangofempathyfortheman.Sheknewwhatitwasliketostruggletomakeendsmeet.Shereachedintoherpurseandpulledoutafewdollarstogivetotheman.Asshehandedhimthemoney,shenoticedhiseyeslightupwithgratitude.Somethingabouthisreactiontouchedherheartdeeply.Sherealizedthateventhoughshewasstrugglingherself,shestillhadthepowertomakeapositiveimpactonsomeoneelse'slife.
Overthenextfewweeks,Janewouldseethesamemansittingonthesidewalkeveryday.Eachtime,shewouldgivehimafewdollarsandtheywouldexchangeafewwords.ShelearnedthathisnamewasJohnandthathehadlosthisjobandhishomeafteraseriesofunfortunateevents.John'sstorytouchedherdeeplyandshefeltcompelledtohelphiminanywayshecould.Shestartedbringinghimsandwichesanddrinkseveryday.Shewouldalsotakethetimetolistentohisstoriesandofferhimwordsofencouragement.
AsshegottoknowJohnbetter,sherealizedthathewasakindandgentlesoulwhohadfallenonhardtimes.Shecouldn'tbearthethoughtofhimspendinganothernightonthestreet.Shedecidedtorenthimasmallapartmentandpayhisrentforafewmonthsuntilhecouldgetbackonhisfeet.WhenJohnfoundoutwhatshehaddone,hewasoverwhelmedwithgratitude.Hecouldn'tbelievethatastrangerwouldbesogenerousandcompassionate.Janedidn'tdoitfortherecognitionorthepraise.Shediditbecauseshebelieveditwastherightthingtodo.
Heractofkindnesshadarippleeffect.Johnwasabletogetajobandstartrebuildinghislife.Healsostartedvolunteeringatalocalhomelessshelter,helpingotherswhowereinthesamesituationhehadbeenin.Jane'schildrenwereinspiredbytheirmother'sgenerosityandkindness.Theystartedvolunteeringatthesheltertoo,learningthevalueofhelpingothersandmakingapositiveimpactontheworld.Whatstartedasasimpleactofkindnesshadturnedintosomethingmuchbigger.Ithadbroughttogetheracommunityofpeoplewhowerecommittedtomakingadifferenceintheworld.Janehadnoideahowmuchofanimpactherkindnesswouldhave.Butsheknewthatithadchangedherlifeinwaysshenevercouldhaveimagined.
Shehadlearnedthatsometimesthesmallestactsofkindnesscanhavethebiggestimpact.Shehadalsolearnedthatweallhavethepowertomakeadifferenceinsomeone'slife,nomatterhowsmallorinsignificantwemaythinkouractionsare.Asshelookedbackonherjourney,shefeltgratefulfortheopportunitytohelpsomeoneinneed.SheknewthatithadbeenaprivilegetobeapartofJohn'slifeandtowitnessthetransformationthathadtakenplace.Shefeltinspiredtocontinuespreadingkindnessandcompassionwherevershewent,knowingthateachsmallactofkindnesshadthepotentialtochangetheworld.
