Together,Jacobandhismotherstartedbrainstormingideasfortheperfectgift.Theysettledonmakingaphotoalbumfilledwithpicturesoftheirfamilyandmemoriestheyhadsharedwiththeirfather.Theyspentdaysgatheringpictures,printingthemoutandputtingtheminthealbum.Theyalsoaddedhandwrittennotesandmessagesofappreciationnexttoeachpicture.OnFather'sDay,Jacobwokeupearlytosurprisehisfatherwiththegift.Hecouldn'twaittoseethelookonhisfather'sfacewhenheopenedit.Ashisfatheropenedthealbum,tearswelledupinhiseyes.Hewastouchedbytheeffortandthoughtfulnessthathadgoneintomakingthegift.Jacobfeltproudtohavemadehisfathersohappy.
Therestofthedaywasspentdoingfunactivitiesasafamily.Theywenttothepark,playedgames,andhadabarbecue.Jacobwasgratefulfortheopportunitytospendtimewithhisfatherandshowhimhowmuchhemeanttohim.Asthedaywascomingtoaclose,Jacob'sfathersathimdownandaskedhimifheunderstoodthetruemeaningofgratitude.Jacobnodded,buthisfatherwantedtomakesurehereallyunderstood."Gratitudeisnotjustaboutsayingthankyou,"hisfathersaid."It'saboutshowingappreciationforthepeopleandthingsthatmattermostinourlives.It'sabouttakingactiontomakethemfeelvaluedandloved."Jacobnoddedagain,buthisfatherwasn'tdoneyet."Andremember,"hecontinued,"gratitudeisnotjustforonedayayear.It'ssomethingweshouldpracticeeveryday,ineverythingwedo."
Jacobtookhisfather'swordstoheart.Herealizedthathehadbeentakinghisfatherforgranted,andthathehadsomuchtobethankfulfor.Hewantedtoshowhisgratitudeeveryday,notjustonFather'sDay.Thenextday,Jacobwokeupearlyandmadebreakfastforhisfather.Hesurprisedhimwithahomemadecardthatsaid"thankyou"onthefront.Inside,hewroteaheartfeltmessageabouthowmuchhelovedandappreciatedhim.HisfatherwasonceagaintouchedbyJacob'sactions.Herealizedthathissonhadtrulylearnedthevalueofgratitude,andthathewassettingagoodexampleforotherstofollow.Fromthatdayon,Jacobmadeaconsciousefforttoshowgratitudeineverythinghedid.Hethankedhisfatherforeventhesmallestthings,likehelpinghimwithhishomeworkorplayingcatchinthebackyard.
Healsostartedshowinggratitudetoothersinhislife,likehismother,hisgrandparents,andhisfriends.Hemadeahabitofsayingthankyouandshowingappreciationwheneverhecould.Astimewenton,Jacob'sattitudetowardslifechanged.Hebecamehappier,morepositive,andmoregratefulforeverythinghehad.Herealizedthatgratitudewasnotjustafeeling,butawayoflife.Oneday,asJacobwassittingintheparkwithhisfather,helookedupathimandsaid,"Dad,I'mreallygratefulforeverythingyou'vedoneforme.Iloveyou."Hisfathersmiledandgavehimahug."Iloveyoutoo,son,"hesaid."AndI'mgratefulforyoueveryday."
Astheysatthereinsilence,Jacobfeltasenseofpeaceandcontentmentthathehadneverfeltbefore.Heknewthathehadlearnedoneoflife'smostimportantlessons–thepowerofgratitude.Fromthatdayon,Father'sDayheldaspecialmeaningforJacobandhisfamily.Itwasadaytonotonlycelebratefathers,buttoshowgratitudeforalltheblessingsintheirlives.AsJacobgrewolder,hepassedonthelessonshehadlearnedtohisownchildren.Hetaughtthemthevalueofgratitude,andencouragedthemtoshowappreciationforthepeopleandthingsthatmatteredmostintheirlives.Yearslater,whenJacoblookedbackonthatFather'sDaysolongago,hesmiledandfeltasenseofgratitudeforallthememoriesandlessonshehadsharedwithhisfather.Heknewthatthosememorieswouldstaywithhimforever,andthathewouldalwayscherishthetimehehadspentwiththemanwhohadtaughthimthetruemeaningofgratitude.
