Yearswentby,andIgrewintoayoungmanwithmyowndreamsandaspirations.Butnomatterwherelifetookme,thewatchremainedaconstantreminderofmygrandfather'sloveandsupport.AndwheneverIfacedachallengeoradifficultdecision,Iwouldlookatthewatchandfeelasenseofcalmwashoverme.Oneday,asIwasgettingreadyforajobinterview,Ifoundmyselfstaringatthewatchonceagain.Icouldfeelmynervesgettingthebestofme,andIknewthatIneededsomethingtocalmmedown.So,Iclosedmyeyesandtookadeepbreath.Andthen,Irememberedthewordsmygrandfatherhadspokentomesomanyyearsago."Justremembertotakecareofit,okay?"hehadsaid.Thosewordstookonanewmeaningtomeinthatmoment–theyremindedmethatthewatchwasnotjustagift,butaresponsibility.Aresponsibilitytomakemygrandfatherproud.Withthatthoughtinmind,Iwalkedintotheinterviewroomwithconfidenceandpoise.Andwhenitwasallover,Igotthejob.AsIwalkedoutofthebuilding,Ilookedatthewatchandsmiled.Ithadbeenwithmeeverystepoftheway–fromchildhoodtoadulthood.
Overtheyears,mygrandfather'shealthbegantodecline,andheeventuallypassedaway.Buteventhoughhewasnolongerwithus,hismemorylivedonthroughthewatch.WheneverIlookedatit,Ifeltasthoughhewasstilltherewithme–guidingme,supportingme,andlovingme.Astimewenton,thewatchbegantoshowitsage.Theleatherstraphadbecomewornandfaded,andthegoldplatinghadstartedtotarnish.Iknewthatitwastimetoretirethewatch–toputitawaysomewheresafewhereitcouldbepreservedforgenerationstocome.ButbeforeIdidthat,Iwantedtodosomethingspecial.Iwantedtohonormygrandfather'smemoryinawaythatwouldmakehimproud.Andthenithitme–Iwouldhavethewatchrestored.So,Itookthewatchtoajewelerandaskedthemtorestoreittoitsformerglory.AndwhenIgotitback,itlookedbetterthanever.Theleatherstraphadbeenreplacedwithanewone,andthegoldplatinghadbeenpolishedtoashine.
Iknewthatmygrandfatherwouldbepleasedwithhowthewatchlooked.Butmoreimportantly,IknewthathewouldbeproudofthepersonIhadbecome–someonewhovaluedfamily,hardwork,andperseveranceaboveallelse.Andso,thewatchnowsitsinaspecialplaceinmyhome–aplacewhereitcanbeadmiredandtreasuredforyearstocome.WheneverIlookatit,Iamremindedofmygrandfather'sloveandgenerosity–andthelessonshetaughtmealongtheway.Ioftenwonderwhatmylifewouldhavebeenlikewithoutmygrandfather'sgift.WouldIhavebeenabletofacethechallengesoflifewithasmuchconfidenceandpoiseasIhavenow?WouldIhavebeenabletostaytruetomyselfandmyvalueswithouthisguidance?Idon'tknowtheanswerstothosequestions.ButwhatIdoknowisthatmygrandfather'sgifthasplayedasignificantroleinshapingthepersonIamtoday.Andforthat,Iwillbeforevergrateful.
